The European goldfinch is a beneficiary of what some people might consider lazy gardening: I have left most spent flowers and seed pods in the garden to provide the birds a source of food this winter. They love to pick seeds out of thistle heads or any other leftover plants that have seeds to give. Moreover, leaving some stray leaves, stems and other plant debris in your flower beds gives countless other creatures a chance to survive the cold winter.
