The Big Bull

About This Artwork

“The Big Bull is inspired by an autumn morning encounter with a very large bull moose. The rut was in progress and I was not welcome in his territory as he emerged from a cold fog. I executed the painting on handmade mulberry paper using a mixture of pastel pencil, watercolor and gouache paints. I applied a gold speckled medium around the torn edges of the paper for texture and impact. This entire process is uniquely my own technique that I developed about 25 years ago. I frame the painting to have the maximum impact by floating the painting in a beautiful dark wood burl frame. This gives the painting more dimensionality to intensify the presence of the big bull.”
