Though their status is Threatened in Minnesota, I occasionally get to see Horned Grebes where I live, and I'm quite fond of them. Artistically, I am taken by their blocky, sculptural shapes, their rich red and gold plumage, and the way their little royal crowns are mimicked by the spring marsh vegetation.
