The three 'Shades of Gray' paintings show a whitetail buck in the place he calls home at three different times during the fall, and at different times of the day. In 'White,' it is late fall or early winter. The stress and rigor of the rut have left this buck tired and hungry. If he is to survive, he will have no choice but to move into the fields to feed in order to restore his lost body weight.
