The three 'Shades of Gray' paintings show a whitetail buck in the place he calls home at three different times during the fall, and at different times of the day. In 'Black,' it is early in the fall and the buck is beginning to make a scrape. Most bucks are very nocturnal at this time of the year and are rarely active, except at night.
