Grebe Ballet by Gary Johnson

Grebe Ballet

About This Artwork

I canoe weekly at a local lake that is part of the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds. This also has a year-round population of Western Grebes that nest in the winter. The grebes are monogamous and are constantly flirting with each other and the “running on water” together in unison is their most unique courtship display. I composed this canvas wrap oil painting to not only show the graceful beauty of the grebes, but to show how they churn up the water when they speedily run on the surface. Truly a sight to behold!
