Bison in the Snow

Bison in the Snow

About This Artwork

As a teenager while on a road trip with my father and brothers, I was fortunate to visit Yellowstone National Park and there saw herds of Buffalo grazing on the sweet grass of summer. The impression made was indelible and would eventually translate into a major studio painting, Spirit of Yellowstone. In this smaller accent piece, Bison in the Snow, I further the chronicling of the lives of these thunderous beasts. A small group of bison walks through a frozen landscape, perhaps looking for the anticipated warmth of the fully gathered herd. Trees, heavy with the winter’s snow, frame their majestic passing. The leader of the group pauses momentarily, surveying the terrain and looking in the moment as if he recognizes our observation. I genuinely enjoy creating these vignettes. They allow both a powerful sense of childhood nostalgia as well as a thrill of new discovery as I unfold a story in oil that has never been told. I hope you enjoy them as well and I want to thank you for sharing my adventures in art.
