The white mullein is showing off its last flowers of the year. We are enjoying late summer in the fields behind the house. There are still so many flowers and the meadow is zooming with crickets and grasshoppers. That this nutrient-poor sandy soil can support this sea of flowers is surprising, it makes for such a rich environment! All these flowers attract numerous insects and butterflies that in turn are enjoyed thoroughly by the birds. There are anthills, tunnels dug by mice, too many species to mention, it’s truly a piece of paradise. And to think that at one point this used to be a cornfield!
