Shirley Cleary was born and raised in Missouri and earned a BFA at Washington University in St. Louis. Through graduate work, she also earned a Masters in Fine Arts. She has traveled extensively, nationally and outside the U.S., both for education requirements and personal fulfillment, gaining source material and refining her talents. She now lives in Montana where she continues to pursue her art and love of fly-fishing.

Shirley Cleary's characteristic subject matter is landscapes, especially including hunters with sporting dogs in the field or fishermen in bodies of water. Her wide-angle compositions emphasize the breadth and depth of the landscape. Additionally, she uses a softly intense color palate which is reminiscent of Romantic era landscape paintings.

Cleary's work has appeared in several art and fly-fishing publications, as well as in numerous museums and shows, including "Women Artists of the West" at the Tucson Museum of Art and the Maryland Waterfowl Festival. Her artwork is also valued in many collections, such as those of the National Parks Foundation and the Federation of Flyfishers International Flyfishing Center.
