Michael Gnatek was born in Massachusetts and began painting at age 11. From that point onward, he has been painting his whole life, including studying art at Yale and spending three years as a combat artist and Sunset Parade VIP portraitist with the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1979, he decided to dedicate his full time to producing his artwork. He now lives in Washington, D.C.

Michael Gnatek's artwork is known as historical in subject; he is recognized for his ability to capture the spirit of both western and military history. He primarily works with oil, graphite, and colored pencil to create his artwork. Because he takes careful time with each of his works, each piece requires four to six months of his dedicated attention to complete.

Gnatek is widely considered one of the nation's premier painters of U.S. military and western history. Because of this, he has been admitted into the honorable Society of American Historical Artists. His paintings are treasured in collections around the world.
