Grant Hacking was born and raised in South Africa. A self-taught artist, he gathered research material for his artwork in South Africa until he moved to the U.S. at age 25. Now living in New England, he paints subjects local to the region as well as from his memories of Africa.

Grant Hacking uses oil paint to create his artwork, which typically represents African landscapes and wildlife or life in the North American West, though he occasionally reduces a landscape or emotion to just its distilled colors and shapes to create an abstract design. Even when painting recognizable figures, Hacking combines realism and abstract elements to create a more painterly composition than is common in the wildlife genre.

Hacking places great importance on the personal experience of each piece of his artwork, even hand picking the frame to complement each piece to ensure he himself is involved in every aspect of the piece from start to completion. He explains, "When all is said and done, being a painter is really about making connectionsthe artist must strive to make certain each painting evokes a personal experience between the viewer and his art, one which allows the imagination to create what the brush leaves out."
