David Maass has been painting for more than five decades, crediting his inspiration for his original paintings to his early interest in wildlife and hunting while growing up in Minnesota as a young boy. He had no formal art education, but with his natural skill and ambition he has become one of the leading wildlife artists in the genre.

His original paintings typically depict waterfowl and upland game birds, rendered with striking realism and careful use of color theme. His subjects are most often in flight over their respective habitat, their distinct shapes emphasized by the open sky behind them. Maass uses oil paint to produce his paintings.

Maass's artwork has been widely acclaimed and recognized, and he has won many wildlife art competitions such as 38 conservation stamp contests. He actively supports wildlife and natural world preservation organizations, donating original paintings to raise funds for conservation efforts.
